Our Services

Our monthly “Employee Spotlight Series” offers a chance to meet members of the team and learn about their experience working with children.

Meet Bethany Walker, OT

Can you describe a typical day at Cheshire Fitness Zone?

I usually start the days in the schools where I am in the elementary school or the preschool and then I transition to the clinic and then I work at the clinic at night, where I see a variety of kids, usually ranging from two years old to 5 years old.

What is your favorite part about your job?

I knew I wanted to work with kids when I was in college. I started going to school to become a preschool teacher then I changed my mind to nursing and then I found OT. During field work experience, I had time to go to schools and see what that was about and I fell in love with working with students with all abilities in the school system. I came here to interview and I fell in love with the sensory integration aspect.

How did you know you wanted to work with kids?

My favorite part about the job is the family aspect. Not only working with the patients but in the clinic setting and being with all of my coworkers, collaborating. As well as the school system where you work with a transdisciplinary approach with a social worker, psychologist, special-ed teachers. So it is really nice to be able to collaborate and come up with a team approach to create the puzzle that is perfect for the child.

What are three words to describe you and why?

Three words to describe me are creative, you have to be on the spot with creating different approaches, whether a child is having a difficult time or your approach doesn’t work. So you really have to be creative and on the spot to be able to develop things that are playful and interact the child in a different way. The second one is nurturing. I feel like working with kids with all abilities, you have to be flexible. You have to be a figure where they can hug you and show that you understand where they’re at. The third one is passionate. I really love my profession, working with children of all abilities and figuring out who they are, letting them know who I am and working with a child and seeing how they progress through their development steps.

What is something you have on your wish list to achieve over the next ten years?

I have three goals for myself over the next ten years. One of them being, increasing movement. So that way, children of all abilities can create their health and wellness plan for a holistic approach. The second one is increasing knowledge with assistive technology as it is increasing in society, especially in school systems. The third being, creating leadership here at the clinic as well as in the OT community by teaching at a college or university as well as helping more fieldwork students in our profession.
